How I chose the sconces for our Tiny Home

When you only have room for two wall lights in your entire RV or tiny home, your choice of wall sconce becomes very, very important.

I agonized for days

… because I wanted a certain look that would compliment the modern farmhouse style that we’re going for in our cargo trailer conversion.

But the lights I ended up choosing had a streamlined feel that would also be at home in a Swedish style or minimal contemporary home.

And yes! I’m saying home without the “tiny” in front of it, or RV. Because these light fixtures would look just as fantastic in a regular-sized house, and they use regular residential voltage (110v).

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me walk you through the steps I took, in the hopes that it’ll help you streamline your shopping journey. Because, let’s face it, sometimes finding the perfect anything can be a time-consuming voyage.

Dream

To begin, allow yourself to go down the rabbit hole (although consider my “Set A Timer” tip below) on Pinterest and Houzz to get a feel for the type of style that appeals to you, and also works with your interior design and decor style.

This helped me to realize that even though I have a Modern Farmhouse theme for our Tiny Home, it wasn’t necessarily the old-fashioned gooseneck barn lights that appealed to me.

This is where the contemporary lighting styles were speaking to me. Photo searches on decor apps proved to me that black would really pop against the white tongue and groove walls we have planned.

Budget

How much do you want to spend? Deciding your spending parameters first will help you limit your search. I didn’t want to spend more than $100 for two matching sconces.

I was actually hoping to spend less (aren’t we all?) but that was my absolute ceiling.

This step really helped me figure out the places that I’d be searching. I knew that my price range limited me to big box stores like Ikea, Lowes, Home Depot and of course, Amazon.

After a quick scan online of what was available from those retailers, and being real about my delivery expectations (which were ASAP) I settled on Amazon. Because Prime is a lifesaver!

Filters

Shopping filters on Amazon are your friend. Otherwise, the “Everything Store” can be pretty darn overwhelming.

On your computer, shopping filters appear on the left side of the page. For my search I filtered with Price and Color. I also mixed it up in the search box, trying both Wall Lights and Sconces.

I also toggled between Featured and Price: Low to High just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

Set a Timer

I wish I remembered to do this more, because having a deadline always improves efficiency. At the very least, it will help keep you on track, instead of being distracted by every squirrel crossing your internet path.

Set an alarm on your phone, and stick to it!

Save your top choices to a Shopping List

If you’re an avid Amazon shopper, you probably already know about this feature.

Under the Add to Cart button on the right, you can Add to Wishlist. You can start a whole new wishlist, just for lights.

Because before you buy, you still have to do some work.

Measure & Model

With some of the lights I was looking at, they had a folding arm, and I just couldn’t wrap my mind around how they’d actually look in the small confined space of our cargo trailer.

We used plastic cups to get a sense of the size and placement.

Not only did I use a measuring tape to figure it out, I also incorporated some solo cups and a table lamp to model the potential silhouette. Brad was a good sport, as usual.

Wondering if those folding arm wall sconces will work for you? If you have a table lamp around the house, hold it up against the wall!

And by doing so I learned that those extended folding arm wall sconces were definitely too big for our little home.

Which wall sconces are you loving right now for your project? Let me know in the comments below!
